Big, Hollywood and mental - McFly Interview

McFly - Please Please single cover

If you thought the teen romance genre was all tired and worn - you can think again. Breathing life into an old dog, McFly's Dougie, bass player, and enthusiastic pop youngster, took time out of his hectic schedule to talk to Lycos music about life on the Hollywood trail and other such matters. Here's what he said.

You've just done a movie called 'Just My Luck', tell us a little bit about that…

D: The movie's about this chick who's got lots of good luck, and this guy who's got really bad luck, and they kiss…and the luck swaps, and all sorts of crazy things happen.

This was your first movie wasn't it?

D: Yeah, it was all pretty mental really, pretty surreal. You know just being on a Hollywood movie set and everything it was all just a bit strange.

So it must have been quite a big production…

D: Yeah, I'm not sure how much it cost or anything, but you know, it was all just quite big, and Hollywood…and mental - we couldn't believe we were actually doing it.

What was it like working with Lindsay Lohan?

D: It was alright - we didn't get to do that many scenes with her; we did more with her co-star, but she was really hot! Chris Pines though, the other guy in the film…he is the biggest legend in the world, he's possibly…I think he's Jesus, he's the second coming of Jesus…

…you really connected with Chris then!

D: We're friends. He played our manager in the film you see, and he really was just the nicest guy.

Are you going to stay in touch with him?

D: Yeah we are; we saw him the last time we were in L.A.

So you're in a car on the way back from the airport - are you doing lots of travelling at the minute?

D: Yeah we are - mainly we've been in America and London, but we've also just finished recording in Ireland, so we've been going backwards and forwards [there] all the time…

...you're recording the new album?

D: Yeah the next record - we've just recorded the main bulk of it in Ireland…

...and when can we expect it?

D: Ah, we're aiming to get that out by sort of autumn time. We're debating between a few names [for the album] at the moment.

'Please Please / Don't Stop Me Now' is the new single out July 17th - it's the official Sport Relief record, how did that come about?

D: I'm not too sure really, I think they approached us because we do a lot of stuff for charity anyway, and they said that they wanted 'Don't Stop Me Now' [Queen track] as the official theme tune and they wanted us to do our own version of it - so we made it a double A-side for the next single.

It's the summer, what's in store for McFly?

D: Our schedule's are hectic - but to be honest I don't know what our plans are, I don't even know what we're doing tomorrow.

Festivals?

D: Well, we haven't got that much longer to get all our bits done on the album, so we'll be doing that and doing the Comic Relief stuff.

On a final note - do you actually believe in luck?

D: In luck? Yeah, I think we're a very lucky band.
