1948: Born November 9 in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

1991: After a modest playing career in the 70s takes over as coach of Criciúma, in Santa Catarina, and wins the Brazilian Cup.

1993: Joins newly-promoted Gremio, one of Brazil's most high-profile teams and leads them to the Brazilian Cup.

1995: Wins Copa Libertadores de America, an annual competition between the top clubs in South America, after defeating Atlético Nacional of Colombia in the final. Runner up in the Brazilian Cup.

1996: Defeats Portuguesa to win the national championship (Campeonato Brasileiro) with Gremio.

1997: Joins another big club, Palmeiras.

1998: Wins the Brazilian Cup and is runner-up in the Mercosur Cup.

1999: Wins Copa Libertadores de America beating Deportivo Cali of Columbia. Loses 1-0 to a Roy Keane goal against Manchester United in the Intercontinental Cup final.

2000: Takes over at Cruzeiro.

2001 June: Takes over at the helm of the Brazilian national team and rescued their faltering qualifying campaign for the 2002 World Cup despite losing his first game 1-0 to Uruguay.

2002 May/June: Drops Brazil legend Romario from Brazil’s World Cup squad despite fierce public pressure and a tearful live television appeal from Brazil’s leading goalscorer. Brazil lift the World Cup defeating England in the Quarter-Finals along the way.

2002 December : Takes over as manager of Portugal.

2004: Becomes the first foreign coach to lead any team to the final of the European Championships. Portugal lose the final to Greece with Scolari again beating England in the Quarter-Finals.

2006: Turns down the England football manager's job.
