Take a tip from some or our celebrity globetrotters: they've forgotten toothbrushes, left their passports behind and spoken more pidgeon English than we've had hot dinners.

Going on holiday is a time to relax and enjoy yourself. However, it is important not to exonerate yourself of all responsibilty, as, in my experience, that is when people get into difficulties abroad.

Richard Branson:
Plan ahead. Having said that, in 1984 on Virgin's inaugral flight to New York I managed to get all the way to US immigration before I realised I had left my passport at home.

Felicity Kendal:
I always travel with Arnica cream and tablets and a small but comprehensive First Aid Kit. Always check out the need for innoculations and read about the places you are going to visit.

Tracy Edwards:
As a woman I always check out the history of the country, paying particular attention to the people's attitudes to the British and male attitudes to women. It's so easy to offend if you don't know these things and if you offend people you are asking for trouble.

Michael Palin:
Read up carefully on the habits and customs of a country. Most people will forgive anything because you're a foreigner but it is amazing the difference it makes if people feel you have made some attempt to understand their way of doing things.

Michael Aspel:
As a woman I always check out the history of the country, paying particular attention to the people's attitudes to the British and male attitudes to women. It's so easy to offend if you don't know these things and if you offend people you are asking for trouble.

Craig Doyle:
Health safety is a priority. I would encourage everyone to get the appropriate pills and jabs before they leave the country. You need to be sensible too, be aware of how strong your constitution is if you're imbibing the local tipple and sampling the local delicacy.

Mary Nightingale:
So many accidents happen because people behave in a way they would dream of doing at home ... things like drink driving, riding a moped without any experience or even going out on a boat without any experience or safety measures. Have fun but be sensible.
